1. Point out the difference between a phrase and clause.

Ans: Difference between a phrase and clause -
• A phrase does not make full sentence but a clause does.

• A phrase does not have finite verb and subject on the other hand a clause has.

• A phrase does not make full sense but a clause makes.

2. Point out the difference between a close and a sentence.

Ans: The difference between a close and the sentence are as follows:-

•  A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a predicate (verb) but a sentence can contain one or more clauses.

•  A clause expresses a complete or incomplete thought but a sentence expresses a complete thought or statement.

3. Bring out the phrases in the following and say what kind of phrases each of them is:

(i) She fainted as soon as she got the bad news.
Ans: as soon as : Conjunction Phrase 

(ii) The children are busy at play.
Ans: at play – Preposition Phrase

(iii) Good heavens! what are you doing?
Ans: Good heavens – Interjection Phrase  

(iv) It is as good as gold.
Ans: as good as gold – Adverb Phrase

(v) Give me a cup of tea.
Ans: a cup of tea – Noun Phrase

(vi) There has been a lot of ups and downs in his life.
Ans: a lot of ups and downs – Noun Phrase

(vii) The thief came in the guise of a beggar.
Ans: in the guise of a beggar – Preposition Phrase

(viii) They returned home in the evening.
Ans: in the evening – Preposition Phrase

(ix) Has she paid her school fees?
Ans: school fees – Noun Phrase 

(x) Mr. Baruah's second son has become a source of trouble.
Ans: a source of trouble – Noun Phrase

(xi) Once upon a time there was a king.
Ans: Once upon a time – Adverb Phrase 

(xii) The poor man has left the village for good.
Ans: for good – Adverb Phrase

(xiii) I am unable to help you in this matter.
Ans: in this matter – Preposition Phrase

(xiv) Do not sit in the sun.
Ans: in the sun – Preposition Phrase

(xv) My sister knows how to drive a car.
Ans: how to drive a car – Noun Phrase (Infinitive Phrase)

(xvi) The old man is hard of hearing.
Ans: hard of hearing – Adjective Phrase

(xvii) The cattle came home at sunset.
Ans: at sunset – Preposition Phrase

(xviii) Raju is not only a good player but also a good student.
Ans: not only a good player but also a good student – Noun Phrase

(xix) No sooner had he reached the station than the train started off.
Ans: No sooner…than – Conjunction Phrase

(xx) The policeman shouted at the top of his voice.
Ans: at the top of his voice – Preposition Phrase

(xxi) The peacock is beautiful beyond description.
Ans: beyond description – Preposition Phrase

(xxii) We all should have a sense of duty.
Ans: a sense of duty – Noun Phrase  

(xxiii) She began to shed crocodile tears.
Ans: to shed crocodile tears – Infinitive Phrase  

(xxiv) I have a gold ring.
Ans: a gold ring – Noun Phrase
