Exercise 1. Change each sentence to indirect form of speech:
1. The teacher said,"Neil is the best boy in my class."
Ans: The teacher said that Neil was the best boy in his class.


2. The angle said, "Beauty needs no ornaments."
Ans: The angle said that beauty needs no ornaments.

3. Sunil said to his friend, "I shall stand by you through thick and thin."
Ans: Sunil told his friend that he would stand by him through thick and thin.

4. They said, "We are only three but we can hold three hundred back."
Ans: They said that they were only three but they could hold three hundred back.

5. The gardener said,"I shall not water these plants today."
Ans: The gardener said that he would not water those plants that day.

6. The watchman said to the thief,"I shall hand you over to the police."
Ans: The watchman told the thief that he would hand him over to the police."

7. The teacher said, "Sohail, you are very careless and you never learn your lessons."
Ans: The teacher told Sohail that he was very careless and he never learnt his lessons.

8. The host said, "The guest came yesterday. They will stay here today and will leave for Delhi tomorrow."
Ans: The host said that the guest had come the previous day and that they would stay there that day and leave for Delhi the next day.

9. The policeman said to the thief,"I have caught you redhanded at last."
Ans: The policeman told the thief that he had caught him redhanded at last.

10. The mother said, "Umesh, you are really very active, my son."
Ans: Addressing Umesh as son the mother told that he was really very active.

11. Amrita says, "I reach school in time daily."
Ans: Amrita says that she reaches school in time daily.

12. Ruby says,"Mother, you are so kind to me. I can never forget you in life."
Ans: Ruby tells her mother that she is so kind to her that she can never forget her in life.

13. The geographer said, "The sun looks rising in the east daily in the morning."
Ans: The geographer said that the he sun looks rising in the east daily in the morning.

14. The saint said, "I shall not die even if you poison me."
Ans: The saint said that he would not die even if he poisoned him.

15. The principal said, "I shall not see you, Vijay. I don't like you because you idle away your time."
Ans: The principal told Vijay that he would not see him as he didn't like him because he idled away his time.

16. The farmer said to the thief," I know you are a rogue. I must beat you to death."
Ans: The farmer told the thief that he knew he was a rogue ans he must beat him to death.

17. Pari said to Ritu,"I have had my share."
Ans: Pari told Ritu that she had had her share.


Exercise 2. Change each sentence to direct form of speech:
1. Kunti said that she was unwell that day.
Ans: Kunti said, "I am unwell today."

2. My friend told me that I didn't look cheerful.
Ans: My friend said to me, "You don't look cheerful.'

3. Mahesh told Kiran that he took regular exercise.
Ans: Mahesh said to Kiran, "I take regular exercise."

4. The mother told Avi that his father would bring him toys the following day.
Ans: The mother said to Avi, "Your father will bring you toys tomorrow."

5. The beggar told the housewife that he had been hungry for two days.
Ans: The beggar said to the housewife, "I have been hungry for two days."

6. The reformer said that honesty is the best policy.
Ans: The reformer said, "Honesty is the best policy."

7. The saint said that God helps those who help themselves.
Ans: The saint said, "God helps those who helps themselves."

8. She told the policeman that she had been robbed of her purse and chain.
Ans: She said to the policeman, "I have been robbed of my purse and chain."

9. The pupil said respectfully that he did know who had done that mischief.
Ans: The pupil said respectfully, "I don't know who has done this mischief."

10. The teacher told the class that he would start the new lesson the following day.
Ans: The teacher said to the class, "I will start the new lesson tomorrow."

11. They say that they are going to Kashmir in summer.
Ans: They say, "We are going to Kashmir in summer."

12. Zoe told him that he knew him and his brother well.
Ans: Zoe said to him, "I know you and your brother well."

13. The doctor told the patient to have complete rest for a month.
Ans: The doctor said to the patient, "Have complete rest for a month."

14. The policeman told us that we must not cross the road against red light.
Ans: The policeman said to us, "You must not cross the road against red light."

15. She told her mother that she would have to leave for Shillong the following week.
Ans: She said to her mother, "I will have to leave for Shillong the next week."

16. They said that they had been to the Ganga several times.
Ans: They said, "We have been to the Ganga several times."

17. The mouse told the lion to spare him that time and that it would not disturb his sleep again.
Ans: The mouse said to the lion, "Spare me this time. I will not disturb your sleep again."

5. Dhir said to his mother, "Is the dinner ready for all?"
Ans: Dhir asked his mother if the dinner was ready for all.

6. The policeman said to the stranger, "Are you Sambha, the notorious dacoit ?"
Ans: The policeman asked the stranger if he was Sambha, the notorious dacoit.

7. The teacher said, "Have you done all the sums, Mira ?"
Ans: The teacher inquired of Mira whether she had done all the sums.

8. The doctor said to the patient, "Are you not feeling well now ?"
Ans: The doctor asked the patient if he was not feeling well then.

9. Keshav said to Radha, "Will you accompany me to the forest ?"
Ans: Keshav asked Radha if she would accompany him to the forest.

10. The students said to the teacher, "Have you marked our papers, sir? Is the result good on the whole ?"
Ans: The students asked the teacher if he had marked their papers and if the result was good on the whole.

11. Seema said to me, "Will you tell me what it means ?"
Ans: Seema asked me if I would tell her what it meant.

12. "Will you dine with us today ?" said my friend to me.
Ans: My friend invited me to dine with them that day. / My friend asked me if I dinned with them that day.

13. I said to my class teacher, "May I come in ?"
Ans: I asked my class teacher if I could come in.

14. Mona said to Sapna, "Can you tell me the story of the poor woodcutter?"
Ans: Mona asked Sapna if she could tell her the story of the poor woodcutter.

15. I said to my cousin, "Shall I pay you a visit tomorrow?"
Ans: I asked my cousin if I should pay him a visit the next day.

Ans: She asked me if I would help her do that sum.

Exercise 2. Change each sentence to direct form of speech:
1. The mother asked her son if he would tell her the name of the girl he wanted to marry.
Ans: "Tell me the name of the girl you want to marry," the mother said to her son.

2. The host asked the visitor if he wanted to have a cold drink or a hot one.
Ans: The host said to the visitor, "Do you want to have a cold drink or a hot one?"

3. Rita asked Deepa if she could accompany her to her college.
Ans: Rita said to Deepa, "Can I accompany you to your college?"

4. We asked Karan if he was going to settle in Kolkata.
Ans: "Are you going to settle in Kolkata?" we asked Karan.

Ans: The teacher said to the pupils, "Have you done all the sums?"

15. The teacher asked the pupils if they didn't know that truth comes out victorious in the long run.
Ans: The teacher said to the pupils, "Don't you know that truth comes out victorious in the long run?"
