1. The rain having stopped, we went to school.

4. Get up at 5 a.m. to catch the train.

13. It is impossible to trust the word of a habitual liar.
Ans: It is impossible to trust the word of one who is a habitual liar.

14. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit.
Ans: The tree which is good cannot bring evil fruit.

15. Accustomed to rule, he disciplined himself to obey.
Ans: He disciplined himself to obey which was accustomed to rule.

16. He owed his success to his father.
Ans: It was his father, to whom he owed his success.



Exercise 2. Convert the following simple sentence into compound sentences:
1. He must run fast to catch the train.
Ans: He must run fast or he will not catch the train.

2. The moon having risen, we went for a stroll.
Ans: The moon had risen and we went for a stroll.

3. In spite of his weakness, he can run fast.
Ans: He is weak but he can run fast.

4. Owing to his mistakes, he could not progress.
Ans: He made mistakes, so he could not progress.

5. For all his wealth, he is unahppy.
Ans: He is wealthy but he is not happy.

6. Having done my job, I went to see a movie.
Ans: I had done my job and went to see a movie.

7. Taking off his clothes, he jumped into the tank.
Ans: He took off his clothes and jumped into the tank.

8. Taking pity on the tiny mouse, the lion let it go.
Ans: The lion took pity on the tiny mouse and released him.

9. Her pleasing manners won her many friends.
Ans: By her pleasing manners, he won many friends.

10. Besides visiting Jaipur, he went to Ajmer.
Ans: He visited not only Jaipur but Ajmer also.

11. In spite of all his efforts, he could not escape arrest.
Ans: He could not escape arrest despite of all his efforts.

12. To my surprise, I found him in the hall.
Ans: I was surprised when I found him in the hall.

13. Hearing their father's foot-steps , the boys ran away.
Ans: The boys heard their father's foot-steps and ran away.

14. In spite of his great strength, he was overcome.
Ans: After hearing their father's footsteps the boy ran away.

15. He was rejected owing to his ill-health.
Ans: Owing to her ill health, she was rejected.

16. He must work hard to make up for lost time.
Ans: He must work hard and make up for the lost time.

17. To his eternal disgrace, he betrayed his country.
Ans: He betrayed his country and it became his eternal grace.


Exercise 3. Convert the following complex sentence into simple sentences:
1. I know that he is a very intelligent boy.
Ans: That boy is very intelligent.

2. It is certain that he is very selfish.
Ans: He is certainly very selfish.

3. A stone that keeps rolling gathers no moss.
Ans: A rolling stone gathers no moss.

4. Do you know the time when he will arrive?
Ans: Do you know the time of his arrival?

5. I cannot help you as I have no money.
Ans: I don't have money to help you.

6. Though he is rich yet he is miserly.
Ans: He is rich and miserly.

7. You cannot stand first unless you work very hard.

Ans: Kindly show me the best hat.

12. The report that he has failed is correct.
Ans: The report of his failing is correct.

13. He uttered only a few words and I recognised him.
Ans: Because of his few words, I recognised him.

14. As you work, you will be rewarded.
